The First Cinereous Vulture Chick in the Vratsa Balkan Nature Park Has Hatched!

The first Cinereous Vulture chick in the Vratsa Balkan Nature Park has hatched!
The little one belongs to the parents Kotlya and Varshec, of whom we have recently informed you that they are the first couple to nest on the territory of the Vratsa Balkan Nature Park.

The chick likely hatched on April 23, 2024, as indicated by the GPS transmitter of the parent bird Varshec. Unfortunately, the  parent bird Kotlya does not have a transmitter as it was lost some time ago, so we rely solely on information from Varshec's transmitter.

Both birds were donated to us by the Regional Government of Extremadura, Spain.
The male bird, Varshec, was found in the wild, caught on a wire fence, and was taken to the Los Hornos Rescue Center in Spain. In 2019, he was transported to Bulgaria and redirected to the adaptation aviary in the Vratsa Balkan Nature Park on September 26, 2019, and released into the wild in July 2020.

The female bird, Kotlya, was hatched in Spain in 2017. In 2018, she was admitted to the Los Hornos Rescue Center in Spain with a fractured femur. After her recovery, she was brought to Bulgaria in June 2019, directed to the aviary in the Vratsa Balkan Nature Park, and released into the wild in June 2020.

Who knows? Perhaps the birds liked each other even in the adaptation aviary. In 2023, they formed a pair for the first time but couldn't hatch because they nested too late.

It's extremely important that the pair nest in an artificial nest made in 2022 by the "Cinereous Nest" Foundation.

This year they managed to hatch their first chick, which was a great success for the park management and all the project partners!
